Cloudscene’s H1 2021 Data Center Ecosystem Leaderboard

In H1, 2021, China Telecom has moved into the top ten in Asia, taking third place, while Equinix and NTT Communications remained in first and second position as ranked in Cloudscene’s H2, 2020 Data Center Ecosystem Leaderboard. Notably, Digital Realty has increased by three places, moving up to number seven on the Leaderboard.

In EMEA, Digital Realty leads in first position, followed closely by Equinix. While Digital Realty remains in the top spot as the market leader for total data center footprint, service provider ecosystem, and network fabric presence, Equinix is the market leader for total cloud on-ramps and ranks competitively for all other categories. This has created a marginal gap in the rankings for the half-year.

Lumen Technologies ranks in third place, while Verizon has moved into the top ten for EMEA, having expanded its data center presence in this region.

The results in LATAM have solidified Equinix, Digital Realty, and Lumen Technologies in the top three places for the region. Navégalo has advanced six places into fourth position, while China Mobile has moved into the top ten at number seven.

North America’s top ten has remained steady with no movement within the rankings. Equinix, Digital Realty, and CoreSite have taken first, second, and third place, respectively.
Equinix, NEXTDC, and Vocus have kept the top three positions for Oceania. The results for this region have seen iSeek and Macquarie Data Centres switch places and reach ninth and tenth positions within the rankings.

H1, 2021 Leaderboard – Oceania

Since the release of Cloudscene’s H2, 2020 Data Center Ecosystem Leaderboard, the colocation, cloud, and connectivity industry’s service footprint had been expanded on a global scale with an additional 408 data centers, 2,515 service providers, 132 network fabrics, and 35 cloud on-ramps being deployed, this half-year. The Asia region accounts for 73% of these total additional facilities including 27% of service providers, 47% of network fabrics, and 20% of cloud on-ramps.

Meanwhile, EMEA has experienced the largest percentage of service providers, specifically, increased across all regions’ data center ecosystems, with a 40% share. With one market within the top five markets for total number for cloud on-ramps, globally, EMEA also has a strong position when it comes to cloud services.

North America has seen the greatest amount of cloud on-ramps added across any region, with a 40% share, and holding three of the top five markets for total number of cloud on-ramps globally – as well as the number one market for new cloud on-ramps anywhere in the world. This has contributed significantly to the region’s cloud footprint expansion.

Oceania also has a market positioned within the top five globally for total number of cloud on-ramps with major Cloud Service Providers investing in considerable cloud on-ramp growth across this region. Oceania has experienced a 300% increase in cloud on-ramps by one major provider, since July 2020.

“Industry leaders have continued to expand their footprint to support the ever-increasing demand for data center, network, and cloud services, which has come about as a result of the global challenges across 2020 and 2021,” said Belle Lajoie, CEO, Cloudscene.

“The results of the H1, 2021 Leaderboard show that Asia, in particular, is experiencing exponential growth which has created some significant movement within rankings for this region. As these developments take place, we’re ensuring accurate and comprehensive data is always available on Cloudscene,” said Lajoie.

Data was sourced from service providers and data center operators, and collated based on the following categories which were each assigned a weight based on relative importance for understanding data center ecosystems across the industry:

  • Total data center footprint (20%)
  • Service provider ecosystem (30%)
  • Total network fabric presence (20%)
  • Total cloud on-ramps (30%)
